Architecture

Architecture was never one of the courses offered by Ar.Co, but words and ideas coming from this area, not to mention projects, circulate and leave their mark. Fernando Varanda designed the restoration plan and oversaw the works that allowed Ar.Co to open its doors in Rua de Santiago No. 18, for the first time, in February 1973. In 1978, Álvaro Siza presented his “20 Years of Work” and the following year, Manuel Vicente gave a talk about Macao while Fernando Varanda another about the Yemen. Between 1981 and 1983, several architects presented themes and projects in a series of talks entitled “7 arquitects” (José Manuel Farelo Pinto, Maurício de Vasconcelos, Raul Chorão Ramalho, Vítor Figueiredo, Bartolomeu da Costa Cabral, Eduardo Trigo de Sousa and Duarte Cabral de Mello) and “5 arquitects” (Raul Hestnes Ferreira, António Nunes de Almeida, Luís Fernandes Pinto, Gonçalo Sousa Byrne and Nuno Teotónio Pereira). In the early 80s, Eduardo Trigo de Sousa planned and oversaw the full reconstruction/renovation of Quinta de S. Miguel, Almada, and later adapted the first of the 3 spaces (Rua de Santiago 13, 17, 19) acquired by Ar.Co in front of its Lisbon school. In the 1990s, project planning came under Philip Cabau, who (together with Alexandre Marques Pereira and, afterwards, Miguel Moura) devised two important remodelling ventures in Quinta de S. Miguel. More recently, Philip Cabau, in collaboration with Bruno Castro Santos and Ana Bustorff Martinho, produced the first evaluation report of the spaces at Xabregas (old market), and a proposal for its future adaptation to Ar.Co’s activities. In 2013 João Santa Rita became responsible for developing the final architecture project.
