Exhibitions
As mentioned in Ar.Co’s statutes as a cultural association, the school not only experiments and provides training, it also promotes. A selective listing, published in Ar.Co’s “Twenty Five Years 1973-1998” book, mentions 271 exhibitions in that period of time. Even before there was any production that the school could call its own, exibitions took a prominent place in the activities program: Luís Noronha da Costa is the first to show his work, in February 1973 (the very month of the school’s opening), and another five exhibitions take place at Rua de Santiago 18 until December (Luís Noronha da Costa once again, António Ferraz, Ana Vieira, Luísa Correia Pereira, French publicity posters lent by the Instituto Francês and a collective show of silkscreen prints published by Ar.Co, from artists António Sena, Eduardo Nery and Fernando Calhau, to which are added printed visual poems by Salette Tavares). In 1975 the work of Photography students is already being shown at school (together with that of other collaborators) and in 1976 the Painting and Drawing studios show their own results. From that point onwards, homemade exhibitions tied to school training will take their place among other kinds of shows (didactic and documentary presentations, exhibitions with a performance component, etc.). In some cases exhibitions are made possible by support and collaboration (from municipalities, for instance) and in others it is the exhibitions themselves that trigger collaborations, connecting the school to the outside, frequently in a travelling mode. Outside and inside Ar.Co’s facilities, in museums, galleries, associations and cultural centres, the school will show a little bit of everything: painting, sculpture, prints, audiovisual and performance pieces, ceramics, glass, photography, design, architecture, jewellery, illustration, collections, books, work by students and work by well known artists, both national and international. Whenever possible (which is frequent) the publication of graphic pages, leaflets and catalogues accompany the presentations. Ar.Co will also be called to participate in group exhibitions, festivals and other public and private events that take very different forms and dimensions, both at home and abroad, as a result of partnerships and protocols with other entities. Starting in the 1990’s, a larger and improved school structure renders public presentations, whether in the school or elsewhere, more systematic (such is the case, for instance, with the annual Scholarship Students & Finalists exhibitions and the Summer/Fall exhibition, but also of the regular presentations of Photography Level 3 students, participants in Youth programs and Evening and Night courses). From 2017 onwards, with the change of Ar.Co's headquarters in Lisbon to the old market of Xabregas, exhibitions and events covering various areas will occur more frequently, mostly oriented towards whatever is not frequently shown in the comercial circuits.
