Workshops
The workshop mode - a hands-on training/learning unit with relative autonomy, eventually brief and whose contents tend towards the specific - is present in Ar.Co since the school’s initial moments. We hardly ever find this designation in the early training programs, but most of the so-called “Open Courses” of the 1970’s are really workshops disguised as “regular training” (maybe because nothing, at that point, had become “regular” yet). The function and objectives of workshops can vary: introduction, thematic synthesis, moment of intensive training, specialization. Still, it constitutes the basic molecular unit of Ar.Co’s artistic training, simultaneously an entryway and a complement, where experimentation by doing is raised to the status of an elementary/ideal learning formula. The ways of conceiving, organizing and developing workshops undergo alterations throughout the school’s forty years of existence (to “participate”, which is vague when compared to actually doing, is today’s assumption), but the relevance of the workshop’s function remains unaltered: to create the spaces where Ar.co can meet with what is outside of it, be it institutions, teachers, techniques, skills or knowledge. The designation sounds particularly right in the AIAS Workshops of October 1992, when Ar.Co was hosting the association’s General Assembly in Lisbon and Manuel Costa Cabral introduced this innovation in the event’s program.
