Meetings with....
Between 1978 and 1982, the cycles called “Meetings with...” keep changing their name: “Meetings with esigners”, “Meetings with Design”, “Meetings with Designers, Objects and People”, “Meetings at Ar.Co with People and Objects.” Personalities, professionals, scholars or practitioners will present a theme, a project, a problem, an experience or an interest. Álvaro Siza opens the cycle in 1978, presenting “20 years of work 1958-78”. Architecture will be a frequent theme (“7 architects”; “5 architects”), but sessions can be about tiles (Rafael Calado) or international exhibitions (Sallette Tavares on the 1978 Venice biennale; Fernando Calhau, Gaëtan, Julião Sarmento and Leonel Moura on the Paris Biennale of 1980; Ernesto de Sousa, António Sena, João Vieira, António Lopes e Silva, Maria João Serrão, Ana Hatherly and E. M. Melo e Castro on the 1980 Venice Biennale; José Luís Porfírio on the Centre Pompidou Paris-Paris show of 1981). Portuguese popular goldsmithing will be a topic (Tereza Seabra), as will marble (Manuel Pedroso from the Fundo de Fomento à Exportação and Vera Gonçalves from the Centro de Design Mármores de Lagos), photography (Reinaldo Viegas, Francisco José Catarino Salgueiro, José Luis Severo, Carlos Manuel Teixeira, Lourenço António Pedro Saraiva, Aires dos Santos and Pedro Vilhena Nunes da Silva), puppet theatre (José Alberto Gil and Helena Vaz), the book (Carlos Araújo from Edições 70), traffic (Leonor Pereira Coutinho da Carris), stained glass (Cary Kelly, canadian stain glass artist), glass art (Madeira Luís, collector), art in context (Eduardo Nery), computer intelligence (Helder Coelho from Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil), Lisbon’s old neighbourhoods (Fernando Assis Pacheco), craft and popular sculpture (Joaquim Carriço Rolo), sculpture in Canada (John Tappin), the Santo Aleixo puppets (Mestre Talhinhas), music (Rui Calapez), company brands (Alda Rosa), stamp collecting and stamp design (José Pedro Martins Barata), the state’s interest in Design (João Salgueiro, then President of the Banco de Fomento Nacional; Santos Gonçalves, Director of quality at the Ministério da Indústria e Tecnologia; Amadeu Pires, from the Instituto de Apoio às Pequenas e Médias Empresas) and, evidently, graphic communication (Robin Fior and David King; Beja Santos).
